We’re currently at Day 2 of Fincon, a convention filled with online educators with an emphasis on finances. This morning, Ramit Sethi of “I Will Teach You to Be Rich” gave us a keynote presentation about spending extravagantly on what we love and to cut back mercilessly on things we don’t love.
It really got me thinking, what’s the point?
What’s the point of saving 50% of your income or making a million dollars from cutting back on Starbucks lattes and investing it?
I had a hard time answering this question. I work on financial success because I think it’s something fun to do. Investing and creating profits is like a solving a puzzle. I have no dreams of what I would buy even if I made a major windfall. When I did well at the end of 2017, my largest splurge was getting LASIK eye surgery.
The only thing that truly brought me joy from my successful flip was knowing that I would be fine without a 9-5 job. I had a proven method of making significant income outside of the traditional path and could focus on making more money without solely relying on an employer to survive. Without being forced to work, I could do the things I love with the people I love.
What do you love spending on and what would you buy if your could afford to spend 4x that amount on those items?
Remember that having a large bank account may look good on a spread sheet, but at the end of the day we’re working, saving, and investing to be able to afford the things we love.
Don’t get so caught up in the hustle that you forget why you even started in the first place!
